Birkeland Innovation facilitates the flow of this knowledge into the commercial sector by technology transfer to existing companies and by the creation of new businesses.

The University of Oslo was founded in 1811 and is Norway's largest and oldest research institution. Today the University has approximately 30,000 students and 4,600 employees. Four Nobel Prize winners, 9 Centers of Excellence, 2 Nordic Centers of Excellence and 1 Center for Research-based Innovation indicate the quality of the research at the University. This platform of first-rate research makes the ideal foundation for the creation of outstanding ideas suited for commercial development. The University-employees generate about 100 new reported inventions yearly.
